**SAD NEWS — GRR 2020 CANCELLED **
Firstly, thank you for bearing with us in these difficult times. As you know we had hoped to be able to hold our event in September but it is with great sadness that, due to Government Restrictions, we have decided that this will no longer be possible.
Whilst there has been some easing of the current lockdown situation, the safety of our competitors and supporters is our priority and we cannot operate safely under the necessary Government Covid 19 guidelines and restrictions that are in place. Mass participation events to include sporting events such as ours are still not permitted, with only groups of six people to be together outside at any time. This may ease further over the coming weeks but a number of our rowers, supporters and volunteers may still not be able to participate for health reasons, whilst others may not be able to travel due to the current quarantine restrictions in place.
We have therefore decided to cancel the 2020 Great River Race and we ask that you join us for GRR 2021 when hopefully we will come back bigger and stronger! We are exploring suitable tides for next year and it may be that we decide to run the Race in early summer as an alternative to our regular September date.
If it is your wish, we will of course refund your entry fee in full.
However, we hope you will consider leaving your entry fee with us for the 2021 Race, the date of which we shall be announcing as soon as possible. This will help us get through the year, minimising the use of borrowings. We are a ‘Not for Profit Company’ which relies heavily on volunteers, but we have considerable ongoing costs despite us now having no prospect of any income in 2020. In return for leaving your entry fees with us, we will guarantee that you will not face any increase in entry fees for 2021.
If you leave your entry fee with us, only to discover that you cannot then enter next year’s Race, please let us know before entries close and we will arrange a refund. Please can we ask that you email any queries to firstname.lastname@example.org and not post via facebook. Due to Covid 19 guidelines we are working remotely where possible so please bear with us and we will get back to you as quickly as we can.
We want to thank you for your continued support as we would not have a Race without you! We look forward to seeing you all in 2021 and watch this space for next year’s date…
Keep safe and well.
The UK Traditional Boat Championship
21.6 Miles from London Docklands to Ham in Surrey
5th September 2020
The Great River Race is London’s River Marathon. A spectacular boat race up the River Thames, it attracts over 330 crews from all over the globe. The Great River Race appeals to every level of competitor! From dedicated athletes who like winning, to those who enjoy laughter, fancy dress and charity stunts, it’s a great fun day out for both competitors and spectators.
We are living in unprecedented times but our priority remains to support the national effort to keep people safe and well.
Whilst we are following the Government’s advice as this crisis evolves day by day, we wanted you to know that it is currently business as usual and we are planning to run the Mayflower Great River Race on September 5, the month to which many events have been postponed in the UK.
In the circumstances though, we would suggest that potential River Racers register your entries and consider deferring payment until further notice as we have extended the Early Bird rate for a further period, when we hope, and expect, the situation to be much clearer. Do please email email@example.com or phone 0044 (0) 20 8398 8141 if you need more information or have any questions or ideas. As advised, we are working from home where possible so please allow a little time for us to get back to you.
We will, of course, keep you informed of any developments and we look forward to seeing you all in September.
Keep safe and well
