For Sale – Virus Yole ‘Custom’ Race (2010)
This Virus Yole is probably one of the very few ‘Custom’ race boats in UK. I commissioned this with Virus/Ahoy Boats in 2010. She is a superb boat and easily rowed as a double or single.
The ‘Custom’ is made of GRP and significantly lighter at 60kgs than the typical plastic Yoles. The other key difference is that she is fitted with Martinoli double wheeled sliding seats; aluminium tracks with extended riggers (plus I pair of unused spare riggers). The set up is similar to fine sculling boats. She has a bespoke Vandercraft combi launching trolley/trailer (cost £650) and Trident UK polyester cover (2018).
There are 2 pairs of hardly used Virus adjustable ‘macon’ sculls and the option to buy 2 pairs of Concept 2 ‘Big Blade Vortex edged’ race sculls (see photos). All blades have plastic protection strips.
‘Carpe Diem’** has been used on charity events by my brother Rob & I in 2011 and 2015. The latter included rowing around Bassenthwaite, Coniston, Derwentwater, Thirlmere, Ullswater and Windermere. In 2017 we raced her out of Beaumaris Rowing Club to do the Round Puffin Race and then the Castle to Castle event. She has successfully coped with Force 5 on lakes and F3 on the sea.
Between times she has been based at Killington Sailing Association as my general training boat for when I am not rowing, coaching or racing, fine racing sculls from Windermere Rowing Club. She has little use in the past 3 years. I am moving into single endurance rowing with a Fyne Boats Oxford skiff and the Yole is now up for sale. She is in fine condition and ready to row, race and enjoy!!
She is for sale at £4000 ovno with the Virus sculls or £4500 ovno with those and the Concept sculls. Reasonable delivery mileage will be considered. Given the lockdown restrictions if you are interested just make contact and we can set up a conversation and I can share other details/answer questions.

(I will be very happy to chat to anyone about her and send high resolution photographs. I have certainly no problems bringing her to Wales and would negotiate a reasonable deal in the overall price to accommodate travel; and when that will be considering lockdowns. I am hoping to get to Anglesey sometime just after Easter anyway.)

Carpe Diem per aspera ad astra – ‘seize the day and reach for the stars’ (a latin pedant might disagree!!). This draws on our father’s WWII service in the RAF (motto ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’), taking on moments to ‘carpe diem’ and to take on hard challenges ‘aspera’. Our dad died of cancer and we have regularly done charity events and challenges for Macmillan alongside other charity groups.
