Welsh Sea Rowing work with Welsh Rowing and British Rowing to offer various courses to all member clubs. Details of these courses are shown below. We will publish the dates of the next courses becoming available well in advance via this website and all our communications channels.

How much will it cost?
Each online classroom is £35, the in-person practical day is £94 so total cost will be £199 (at time of writing this article)
Please note that you must also join British Rowing with an annual membership, this will cost an additional £32.50.
Who can attend?
Anyone over 16 years of age who is inspired to develop themselves and their coaching skills.
How long is the award?
3 x online sessions – the three online classrooms are 2.5 hours each
1 x Face to Face session – the practical day is 7 hours.
To complete the training in full, you need to complete all four modules within an 18 month period.
Course Aims
‘Bringing Your Coaching to Life’ brings the concepts of the Assistant Coach online classrooms* together to deliver the fundamentals of good coaching practice in a practical setting. With peer to peer coaching, you will have the opportunity to understand how to coach skill development, underpinned by the principles of the Rower Development Guide. You will also be introduced to the British Rowing Technical Model. The module is aimed at anyone who is starting out on their formal learning journey and is applicable to coaches working with rowers of any ability.
The training is a core foundation for any coach wanting to experience the principles of the practical coaching environment. You will be supported to understand how to develop and progress as you gain experience back at your club. The module will cover:
- Skill Development
- The British Rowing technical model
- Effective communication
- The coaching process
- Goal setting
- The feedback cycle
- Reflective practice

British Rowing - Assistant Coach Course March 2026
The next Assistant Coach Course (module 4) for fixed seat rowing will be held in New Quay on Saturday 28th March 2026. (This is the in-person practical day, you must still complete 3 online modules to complete the training).
Start Date: Saturday 28th March 2026.
New Quay Yacht Club, will be our host.
Please bring a pack lunch - Tea & Coffee will be available.
(Don't forget that to complete your Assistant Coach Training in full, you need to complete all four modules within an 18 month period. )

UKCC British Rowing Level 2 Club Coach Sliding Seat Course
Overview
Where: Join the British Rowing Club Coach (Sliding Seat) course at the Monmouth Rowing Club, Old Dixton Road, Monmouth, NP25 3DP.
When: 19 October (Saturday), 20 October (Sunday), 26 October (Saturday) and 27 October (Sunday) 2024. The course will commence at 0900am on all days.
About the course: The British Rowing Club Coach (Sliding Seat) course is a recognised Level 2 Certificate in coaching rowing. The qualification is the first step towards coaching individuals on the water and is aimed at beginner coaches. It is applicable to coaches working with all groups, from novices to competent rowers. The qualification focuses on developing three core coaching behaviours:
- Having a concern for standards
- Being a rower-focussed coach
- Looking to develop continually as a coach.

- Equipment and set-up.
- Warm up and cool down.

Who can attend? Anyone over 16 years of age inspired to develop their coaching skills. For 16–17 age group, please look in the section titled ‘For Coaches aged 16-17’.
Mandatory Pre-requisites:
All learners will need to have completed some additional workshops before signing up to a Level 2 course. The prerequisites for this qualification are:
- Safety Basics Online Module here
- Cold Water & Hypothermia Online Module here.
- Capsize and Recovery Training here
Once you have completed these workshops, you will need to upload the certificates onto the ‘Credentials’ section of your membership account with British Rowing. The system will only allow you to book on once this process has been completed.
A current ‘Emergency Aid’ and ‘Safeguarding & Protecting Children’ certificate must be held at the time of booking your ‘Independent Assessment’.
'Safeguarding and Protecting Children' training must be through UK Coaching - see https://www.ukcoaching.org/courses/workshops/safeguarding-protecting-children. 'Emergency Aid' can be done with any independent provider. It must be a practical course that includes emergency CPR training.
For Coaches aged 16-17:
If you are 16 or 17, you will need to be 16 at the time of booking. A parent or guardian will need to complete a consent form, which will be sent as a part of the booking confirmation email at the time of booking. Once you complete the ‘independent assessment’, your assessor will submit your ‘Record of Achievement’. Once you have been passed, you will be certificated fully after your 18th birthday. Until you are 18, you must be supervised during all coaching activities.
You will be required to complete Safeguarding and Protecting Children 16-18 instead of the equivalent training for adults.
