Glossary of Rowing Terms

Glossary of Rowing Terms and Jargon for Celtic Longboat Rowing.

Within the Celtic Longboat rowing community there is a considerable degree of uniformity in the use of terminology, it is striking however, for those amongst us that have rowed with or guest rowed with more than one club, that there are variations in the use of terms and more strikingly commands (from the cox) which may give rise to uncertainty. This will, in most likelihood cause momentary confusion but there is the potential for risk e.g., if a command is misinterpreted or not understood.

With this in mind the following is a guide of preferred terms which we may choose to adopt as a group. This document is intended to be fluid and subject to change and modification according to the prevailing opinions of clubs/rowers. It cannot be all encompassing and should be added to by consensus. The choice of terms may not be always be strictly as defined elsewhere or enjoy exact nautical accuracy but agreed according to the definitions we choose.

Anyway, hopefully this will all be useful and interesting. Dive in.

If anyone would like to suggest any changes / amendments to this document please submit them to the WSR Secretary secretary@searowing.wales and they will be discussed at the next executive meeting for inclusion or exclusion.
