Most frequent questions and answers for all things Welsh Sea Rowing
Welsh Sea Rowing (WSR) has boats it can loan out to WSR affiliated members and priority for this would be given to new clubs. Therefore, affiliation to WSR is the first step. There are several documents which will require completion and submission, as well as the individual rowers being affiliated. All documents can be found on this website under the WSR Membership tab. The documents to complete and return are:

- WSRA Safety Audit.
You would also need to supply a copy of your club constitution.

To encourage new clubs to form, WSR will cover the cost of the new club’s affiliation for the first year (until March 31st), meaning the new club only need pay to affiliate its individual members for that first year.
New rowers are permitted and covered by WSR insurance to have two free taster rows before they must affiliate. They must have affiliated to the league prior to their third row.
If an individual has been unable to row for a long period of time due to injury or illness and they are unsure whether they will be capable of rowing again, the insurers have agreed that they may have two try out sessions again, without having to reaffiliate to the league. If they are able to row, they must re-affiliate prior to their third time out in the boat.
The general WSR insurance will cover members from the age of 3 to 80, for members over 80 years old, a special provision needs to be put in place for them as named individuals, please inform WSR in order for this to be put in place.
The WSR public liability insurance covers the production and sale of hot food at regattas as a fund-raising activity.
WSR Equipment Insurance only covers the rowing boat and its associated equipment (as covered within the schedule) up to 12 nautical miles from land, if an open sea crossing is being attempted where the route exceeds this distance, e.g. Celtic Challenge, Anglesey to the Isle of Man etc. then extra insurance provision must be put in place. Please contact the WSR Insurance Officer for further advice, if you use an alternative insurance provider please contact them directly for advice.
The WSR insurance covers 1 passenger (subject to the passenger being affiliated to WSR) in appropriate weather conditions and subject to the normal rules regarding life jackets etc.
Should an incident occur when out rowing, should any non-insured rowers (other than those within their two try out sessions) be in the boat, this could invalidate the insurance for that whole crew.
Individuals MUST be WSR affiliated members to race in league races.
Criteria for entrants to non-league races arranged by WSR clubs can be decided by that host club. As minimum you should ensure that the competing boat/crew has their own (adequate) personal and public / third party liability insurances in place.
Safety Boat ratio for league races – ratio of 1 safety boat to 6 Celtics, with a minimum of 3 in attendance.
You must attend 5 races to host your own race the following season, this can include your own league race (as from second season) and one WSR club arranged non-league race if you wish.
Minimum age of rowers – WSR advice is in line with British Rowing guidelines, which state that juniors should be a minimum age of 11 years old to row. The BR guidelines are based predominantly on the understanding that they will be sculling. BR Guidelines do not recommend that under 14 year olds row sweep boats.
The minimum age for a junior to cox in home waters is 14 years old.
The minimum age for persons to cox in a league race is currently 18 years old (without special dispensation from WSR).

Any complaints to the Association may only be considered by the Officers of the Association if the parties involved follow the processes set out in the WSRA (Non Race) Appeals Procedure document.
The WSR affiliate year runs from 1st April to the 31st March. Clubs should re-affiliate before the end of March in order for their insurances to be in place ready for the 1st April. If a club, or an individual affiliates mid-season, this affiliation will still only run until the end of March, it is not a rolling year.

So long as one person working with a junior crew / vulnerable adults is DBS checked, it is ok for another individual to be present that doesn’t have a DBS check, even if they are stood on the beach.
You do not have to have a Level 2 Coach in your club to be able to run juniors, just the relevant levels of experience, and to fulfil the criteria above.
Under the Safeguarding Policy all coaches working with Children or Vulnerable Adults should have an up to date and valid DBS.
If you do not come into regular contact with children or vulnerable adults then a governing body of sport cannot request a DBS check. (Regular contact is defined as once per week or more, intensive contact is four or more days in a 30-day period, or overnight).

Persons who already have their own Personal and Public Liability insurance in place are still expected to affiliate to WSR. This money shows commitment to the club, ensures that individuals do not accidentally end up in a league race when not affiliated, and also a portion of this affiliation fee goes into the WSR account to be used for sponsorship, purchase of equipment to be loaned to clubs, maintenance of equipment, administration of the league etc.
New members must be registered by 9.00pm on a Wednesday evening at the latest, in order for that individual to be affiliated before a race the same weekend, and payment must be received either by BACS transfer, or by cheque to be received no later than the Saturday morning.
WSR will hold an AGM every January, directly followed by an Executive Meeting, there will be 3 further executive meetings during the course of the year. Clubs may request to add any items to the agenda for discussion and may also choose to present their item in person.
At an AGM each club may have 1 vote. At Executive Meetings only the Executive Committee Members may vote.
A workshop shall be run each January alternating between holding a race event, and coxing, or any other subject which may be deemed necessary or relevant at that time.
Yes, at the end of the racing season there will be a league presentation dinner usually held in October or November. It is always an entertaining night with normally a guest speaker followed by the trophy presentations and then a chance to dance the night away to an excellent band. A carvery based selection for food is the preferred option while also catering for vegetarian and vegan members. The event is ticket only and these will go on sale generally 3 – 4 weeks beforehand. The venue details will be sent out normally around September.
The oars we have to use for Celtic Longboat league races must be Macon. The advice/reason regarding this is: Where Cleevers have a bigger surface area and grip the water much better, Macons allow for more ‘slippage’. While this means that they are less efficient, there is a higher risk of back injury if you have a very heavy, slow boat and you are putting your whole body weight into it, the ‘slippage’ in the Macon softens the stroke slightly. There’s also the issue of the position of the spine in the spoon; the Macons are easier to keep out of the way of waves.
