Event Overview

Location: Beaumaris, Anglesey

Date: Saturday 20 June 2026

The Puffin Island Race is a coastal rowing event organised at the Royal Anglesey Yacht Club (RAYC). Crews will race around Puffin Island or an alternative course depending on weather conditions.


Event Schedule

  • 09:00 – 10:00: Registration & check-in at RAYC (LL58 8BY)
  • From 09:00: Breakfast & refreshments available
  • 10:00: Coxes briefing (downstairs bar)
  • 10:40: Launch
  • 11:00: Race start
  • Approx. 12:30 – 13:00: Race finish
  • After racing: Lunch, prize giving & raffle

Entries

  • Entries must be submitted via this online form.
  • Confirmation is sent by email within 24 hours.
  • Entry deadline: 17 June 2026
  • Maximum of 24 boats (waiting list applies if oversubscribed)
  • Do not travel without confirmed entry.

Entry Fees

  • £12 per crew member (£60 per boat)
  • Includes post-race food
  • Payment options: cash, card, or bank transfer

Race Categories

  • Women’s
  • Seniors
  • Mixed

Categories include Open, Veterans, and Super Veterans for Celtic longboats. Quad sculls are also welcome.


Race Decisions

  • Pre-race decision: 17:00 Friday 19 June
  • Final decision: 07:00 Saturday 20 June

Updates will be communicated via Facebook, WSR, and direct contact where possible.


Rules & Safety

  • Races run under Welsh Sea Rowing Racing Rules
  • No crew rotation allowed during the race

Mandatory Safety Equipment

  • Life jacket for every crew member
  • VHF radio and whistle (mandatory)
  • Tow rope and bailer
  • First aid kit and survival blankets
  • Throw bag
  • Recommended: waterproof mobile phone

Spot safety checks may take place before launch.


Catering

  • Free lunch provided for competitors
  • Supporter lunches available (£5, must be booked by 10:30)
  • Bar open from midday

Arrival & Logistics

  • Trailer unloading at Beaumaris Green (“stones” area near RNLI station)
  • Gate opens from 08:00 Saturday
  • Trailer storage available on-site
  • Towing vehicles must use main car park (chargeable)
  • Limited street parking available

All crews must complete registration between 09:00 and 10:00.

  • Breakfast, tea, coffee & cake available
  • Bar (open from midday)
  • Toilets and showers available

Beaumaris offers pubs, cafes, restaurants, takeaways, and ice cream shops. Booking is recommended due to high demand.

Water

Free water refill station available at RAYC – bring reusable bottles.
