Solva – Ramsey Island Challenge 2025

‘Not for the faint hearted’ – an 8 mile row through the legendary Ramsey Sound

Entries are open for crew or crews of Longboats, Coastal Sculls & Gigs

Please note we currently have enough safety boats to provide safety for 24 entries!

Entry Priority will be given to Celtic Longboats. If you are attending in another type of boat then we cannot guarantee your entry will be accepted on the day of the race if we are over subscribed on Entries. (If not entering a Celtic Longboat we recommend you pay by cash on the race day).

Race Entry Fees £10 per crew member

Please note that the race will start on time so that boats can row through Ramsey Sound at slack water.

 

We strongly advise pre–registering for this race as entries are expected to fill up quickly. Please register your crew using this link – https://bit.ly/4dYqkok Online payment available.

Please advise estimated numbers/crews by Wednesday 7th MAY to Steve Probert – info@solvarowingclub.co.uk – so we can arrange safety boat cover.

 

Clubs registering attendance after this date may not be accepted.

All crews must bring life jackets to the race. Depending on conditions on the day, wearing them may be mandatory as an alternative to cancelling the race. The risk of swamping during a beach launch is real. Good bailers i.e.. small buckets are essential.

 

Directions

The event is taking place from Whitesands Beach near St Davids.

From the East … London, Cardiff and the M4:

Take the A48 to Carmarthen, followed by the A40 to Haverfordwest and the A487 to St Davids.  From St Davids, follow signs for Whitesands (B4583), and drive all the way down to the beach –
a distance of 2 miles.

 

From the North … Aberystwyth, Cardigan and the A487:
Take the A487 to St Davids.  From St Davids, follow signs for Whitesands (B4583), and drive all the way down to the beach – a distance of 2 miles.

Unloading and Parking

On arrival at Whitesands, boats should be unloaded from the slipway at the bottom of the car park onto the beach. Marshalls will be on hand to direct you and help to unload if required. Trailers are to be left in the designated area on the beach. Please park cars in the car park.
St Davids City Council have kindly agreed to waive the parking charges for 30 towing vehicles.

 

Catering

Pre Race – FREE Teas & Coffees & other refreshments available from 10:00 (donations welcome).

Post Race – Solva Rowing Club regret we are unable to provide post-race food for all rowers due to limited facilities available to us to provide food safely in the event area.

However, Whitesands Beach House Cafe are available for purchase of hot food and snacks after the race. The cafe is also fully licensed and sells beers, wines and other alcoholic beverages.

Toilets are available in the public car park. (40p a go!)
